A16-year-old California girl who tried to sail solo around the world has said that she still loves sailing and hopes one day to fulfill her dream of crossing the globe.

Abby Sunderland was rescued in the Indian Ocean by a French fishing boat after her mast was smashed by massive waves and she was left drifting at sea for three days

Speaking by phone from the remote Kerguelen Islands, near Antarctica, Sunderland also defended her parents, who have come under fierce criticism since she hit the three-story-high waves on Thursday and triggered a tense, 20-hour-long search.

Sunderland also acknowledged that her adventure might "look pretty crazy."

"But the thing is, those people don't know me and if they did they wouldn't be criticising my age", she said.
