The FA has confirmed Rio Ferdinand will miss the World Cup with a left-knee ligament injury.
The 31-year-old left hospital on crutches earlier after suffering the injury in a training session just 24 hours after arriving in South Africa.
Tottenham defender Michael Dawson has been called up and is set to fly to South Africa later, while Steven Gerrard has been named captain
The news will come as a bitter blow for coach Fabio Capello, who installed Ferdinand as John Terry's replacement as captain in February.
