This month in Arlington history……
On April 25, 1980, President Carter authorized a secret military operation, Operation Eagle Claw, to free the 53 Americans who had been taken hostage on November 4, 1979, when the U.S. Embassy was seized in Iran. The mission was aborted when two of the aircraft involved in the mission collided, killing eight American service members.
The first soldier to be buried in Arlington was Private William Henry Christman of Pennsylvania on May 13, 1864.
