Darius Campbell has landed a starring role in a one-off performance of the opera Carmen.

The 29-year-old, who recently changed his surname from Danesh to Campbell, to reflect his Scottish roots, will play the principal role of Escamillo the toreador.

The role comes on the back of Darius winning the TV show Popstar to Operastar in February.

Darius first found fame with his unusual rendition of Britney's Baby One More Time on reality show Popstars The Rivals back in 2001.

Subsequently he tried his luck on Pop Idol, released two albums and has had roles in West End musicals Chicago, Guys and Dolls and Trevor Nunn's adaptation of Gone with the Wind.

Darius will make his professional opera debut in Carmen on May 23.
