Manchester United have crashed out of the Champions League at the quarter-final stage.

Sir Alex Ferguson's side were 3-0 up at one point in the second leg of their clash with Bayern Munich, thanks to a goal from Darron Gibson and two from Nani.

But Ivica Olic pulled a goal back just before half-time, then Arjen Robben rocketed a volley past Edwin van der Sar in the 73rd minute.

The match finished 3-2 to Manchester United, leaving the score 4-4 on aggregate and putting Bayern Munich through on the away-goals rule.

Wayne Rooney was a surprise inclusion in United's starting 11. The star striker - who picked up an ankle injury in the first-leg tie in Germany - failed to score and was substituted in the second half when he looked tired.

Manager Sir Alex Ferguson said: "I think we have done well, I think we have performed well.... we were very unlucky tonight."
