Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has said Wayne Rooney will be out for two to three weeks with the ankle injury he picked up playing against Bayern Munich on Tuesday.
Rooney's injury was confirmed as a minor ligament strain by the club on Thursday and Ferguson said in his Friday press briefing that the England international would be back within three weeks.
That rules Rooney out of the second leg of the Champions League quarter-final against Bayern Munich.
There were fears Rooney, who has scored 34 goals for the league leaders this season, could miss England's World Cup campaign in South Africa.
But it appears the striker could now return for the derby against Manchester City on April 17.
"The nation can breathe again. We're relieved, it could have been worse," United manager Alex Ferguson said.
