Australian Kym Purling is a world famous pianist and composer. He saw Shen Yun Performing Arts at Mahaffey Theater at the Progress Energy Center in St. Petersburg, Florida.

He said Shen Yun’s orchestra was “fantastic.”

[Kym Purling, Pianist and Composer]:
“In regards to the orchestra, what I find most interesting is the blend of the Chinese instruments and the Western instruments. There are a lot more Western instruments than there are the Chinese ones, but I’m sitting in the front row of the orchestra pit watching the gentleman play the erhu and the xiang (on the pipa) and a couple of other instruments I don’t even know the name of. But it’s fantastic.”

He said the coordination between the orchestra and dancing was very good.

[Kym Purling, Pianist and Composer]:
“I think that that’s another compliment to the conductor because I’ve done that myself in the shows I’ve conducted, that’s not an easy task to do. And it’s not easy for the dancing to be able to hear the music well either. You know, so everybody seems to be focused, and everybody seems to be doing their job well and it’s coming together beautifully. It looks fantastic, sounds amazing.”

He was impressed by Chinese culture and said the show was inspiring.

[Kym Purling, Pianist and Composer]:
“I think it’s definitely inspired me. I’ve learned more about Chinese culture. I am already trying to study myself about Chinese classical music. I think this is a little benchmark for theaters and shows at the moment for people to say, ‘here’s a real cultural offering.’”
