At least 16 people, including children, are feared dead after a boat capsized in a local river in India’s West Bengal state.

About 29 people from the state’s capital city of Kolkata took a boat for a joy ride on the river.

After a certain distance, the oarsman could not take the boat further and the boat overturned.

Some of the people were able to swim ashore and the rest are still missing.

[Amar Roy, Rescued Passenger]:
“We had children with us and we got so scared that we did not know what to do. There were about 16 youngsters aged about 16-17 and the rest were all about 4-7 years old. Three children have been found and they are still looking for seven children and nine teenagers.”

Divers have been called in to search for the missing people.
