Katsu Kaishu was a Japanese politician and military man from the end of the Edo period to the early Meiji period. He is known for his efforts in establishing the Shogunate's navy and for introducing Western military technology to Japan. He also played a major role in negotiating the bloodless surrender of Edo, contributing greatly to the peaceful end of the Tokugawa Shogunate. His achievements played an important role in laying the foundations of modern Japan.
