Lille is the capital of the Nord department in the Hauts-de-France region. It is located just a few kilometers south of the invisible border with Belgium and is part of Flanders. The “capital of Flanders”, as it is called in France, has a breathtaking and eventful history. From the Middle Ages to the French Revolution, Lille was a garrison town, as evidenced by the citadel. There were many wars in which Lille was on one side or the other, but none were as devastating as the First and Second World Wars, which were accompanied by occupation and destruction.
