North Koreans marked the 13th anniversary of the late leader Kim Jong Il’s death on Dec. 17, 2024, state media reported. In footage provided by the country’s official news agency KCNA, which cannot be independently verified by Reuters, Pyongyang residents and soldiers were seen laying flowers near statues of Kim Jong Il and the state's founder Kim Il Sung at the Mansu Hill Grand Monument in Pyongyang. The footage also showed North Korean flags flying at half mast. Kim Jong Il is believed to have died on Dec. 17, 2011 due to medical conditions exacerbated by a heart attack.
