Next, we explore the concept of BOD, which measures the amount of oxygen microorganisms require to break down organic matter into carbon dioxide (CO₂) and water (H₂O). When untreated wastewater, rich in organic material, is released into a river, microorganisms consume large quantities of oxygen to decompose organic matter. This can deplete the river's DO levels, potentially leading to anoxic (oxygen-depleted) conditions, harming aquatic life, and causing environmental damage.
