Germany’s foreign intelligence chief, Bruno Kahl, has warned that Russia’s growing military power may escalate tensions with NATO, potentially leading to war with the West by the end of the decade.
Article 5, NATO’s cornerstone for collective defense, obligates all member states to respond if one is attacked.
Kahl suggested that Russia might test this clause by launching limited provocations or direct strikes to challenge the alliance’s unity.
Kahl emphasized that Russia’s growing military strength, including battle-hardened troops and modern drone warfare, poses a significant threat, raising concerns that Moscow could be planning for war with Germany or other NATO allies by the end of the decade.
