On March 5, 1986, Jaco Pastorius would unveil his newest trio, featuring Biréli Lagrène on guitar and Thomas Böröcz on drums. The concert, which took place at the Teatro CTM in Rezzato, was taped by Italian bass player and composer Alberto Bientinesi, who was kind enough to send me the recording.
The show, which opened Jaco's 1986 tour of Europe, consisted of the usual staples "Continuum," "Teen Town," "Black Market," and this, "The Chicken," as well as new additions: Freddie King's "The Stumble," Bob Marley and the Wailers' "I Shot the Sheriff," and Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn's "Satin Doll." Unlike the PDB shows from some months back or the late 1985 shows at the Brecker Brothers' Seventh Avenue South, this tour featured a lot of bass solos, both accompanied and unaccompanied.
This concert spawned some of my favorites, among which is the one here, which starts at 3:03, following Biréli's expectedly solid guitar solo. Jaco's tone is on point, as is his playing, with even the faster runs provided very precisely. This is all I have to say for now; I think the music speaks for itself.
