Kelly Harrell was born on September 13, 1889, in Draper's Valley, Wythe County, Virginia.
In early 1925, he recorded four titles for Victor. In that year he also had an Okeh recording session.
His first Victor discs sold well enough for the company to invite Kelly to record additional titles in 1926, 1927, and 1929 (for some reason he did not enter a recording studio in 1928).
He did not play an instrument. Kelly Harrell always required backing by other musicians. That added to the expense of issuing new Harrell discs--studios did not offer him work during the hard times of the Depression.
He died on July 9, 1942, due to a heart attack.
