Among the best-known artists of the seventies, during his career he recorded and produced two hundred and eighty-nine songs, of which one hundred and forty were written by himself. Songs such as Take Me Home, Country Roads, Leaving on a Jet Plane, Thank God I'm A Country Boy, Rhymes and Reasons, Annie's Song, The Bells of Rhymney and Rocky Mountain High have become musical standards. In addition to music, John Denver cultivated a great passion for flying. An expert pilot, he owned several airplanes. On October 12, 1997, he crashed while he was piloting his Rutan Long-EZ in Monterey Bay, California. His remains were recovered from the sea and cremated and scattered over the Rocky Mountains.
