How did Captain America return at the end of Endgame?
The directors of Endgame, brothers Joe and Anthony Russo, followed the explanation given by the film itself, that when you go back in time you end up creating an alternative timeline, continuing in a reality that does not alter the main timeline. In other words, if an Avenger went back in time to kill Thanos when he was still a baby, as suggested by Rhodes/War Machine, none of this would have affected the timeline from which the person started, and Thanos' extermination would continue. intact.
And it was this explanation that Joe and Anthony Russo gave at the time, that Captain America lived alongside Peggy in another timeline and then found some way to return to the main timeline to deliver the shield to Sam, either using the Pym Particles, a new machine, or any other invention from your timeline.
