Four people have died and more than 40 people have been injured in forest fires sweeping across central and northern Portugal.
More than 5,000 firefighters were struggling to bring 107 active fires under control on Tuesday, said officials. Of the 40 people injured, 33 are firefighters. The authorities said that the situation on the ground is “very difficult”.
Luis Montenegro, Portugal’s Prime Minister said the fires are “raging across the country”. He thanked France, Greece, Italy and Spain for their “rapid and essential help in combating this scourge” in a post on X.
The authorities have evacuated villages, closed motorways and asked the European Union to send more water-bombing aircraft.
