Israeli police clash with protesters after hostages death

Israel’s largest trade union has begun a strike after hundreds of thousands of protesters called on Binyamin Netanyahu’s government to accept a deal with Hamas after the Islamist militants executed six hostages.

The country’s main airport suspended flights for two hours on Monday morning after the Histadrut, which represents about 800,000 workers, announced that the “entire Israeli economy will go on complete strike”.

Dozens of protesters began blocking streets in Tel Aviv, according to The Times of Israel, demanding that the government secure a deal to release the remaining hostages.

The strike will affect schools, universities, hospitals and local municipalities, and could be joined by private business owners.

Overnight, police arrested 24 people and used water cannons as an estimated 300,000 protesters attended demonstrations in Tel Aviv, according to the Hostage Families Forum, which organised them. The group said that about 500,000 had turned out to protest across the country.
