A City Under Siege
Kharkiv, located just 40 kilometers (25 miles) from the Russian border, has been relentlessly bombarded by Russian forces since the invasion began in February 2022. This recent strike marks yet another chapter in the ongoing siege of this resilient city.
Key Locations Targeted
The missile attack was widespread, hitting several key locations across the city. Among the structures damaged were the Kharkiv Sports Palace, a shopping center in the Saltovsky district, and a building near the Hydropark in the Kyiv district. The scale of the attack has left the city on high alert, with officials warning that the threat of further strikes remains significant.
A Message from Local Leaders
In response to the attack, Oleh Sinehubov took to Telegram to condemn the strikes. “Russia is terrorizing Kharkiv again with strikes on civilian infrastructure within the city,” he wrote. Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov also provided updates, revealing that one of the missile strikes targeted a private residential area. “Several yards and a supermarket are on fire. There are casualties, including medical personnel,” Terekhov reported.
Unconfirmed Reports and Rising Tensions
As more information emerged, the local Telegram channel "Kharkiv ded" claimed that the city might have been hit by as many as 20 rockets, causing widespread destruction and numerous injuries. Unconfirmed reports suggest that the missiles used in the attack included Iskander missiles and S-300/400 missiles, launched from the Belgorod and Rostov regions in Russia.
