After famously skipping his favored 100m sprint at the 1924 Olympics, Eric Liddell won gold in the 400m. But despite also having the opportunity to extend his record of seven rugby caps for Scotland, Liddell turned his back on sporting celebrity to return to the country of his birth, China. He lived there as a teacher, coach and then medic after the Japanese invaded. He died in an internment camp in 1945.
