Rare deep-sea oarfish discovered off California coast
A group of kayakers and snorkelers off the coast of San Diego encountered a rare 12-foot oarfish, a deep-sea creature seldom seen and rarely found in California waters.
Reuters was able to confirm the location from the buildings characteristics and coastline layout which match satellite, file and street view imagery of the area. Local media reports verify the date of footage.
The silvery fish was found floating dead and brought ashore with the help of marine experts for further study.
Oarfish, known for their long, ribbon-like bodies, inhabit the deep sea's mesopelagic zone and are often linked to myths predicting natural disasters.
