John Schulman, a co-founder of OpenAI, announced he will leave the company to join rival Anthropic, an AI safety startup. At OpenAI, Schulman worked on refining models and led the post-training team. He was recently put in charge of a safety committee. Schulman said he wants to focus more on AI alignment and do hands-on technical work again. OpenAI and Anthropic are competing to develop powerful generative AI models that can have human-like conversations. Schulman said OpenAI executives are committed to safety work, but he wants a new challenge at Anthropic.
