11 killed after fire sweeps through building in Manila's Chinatown
A fire broke out and engulfed a part of a five-story residential and commercial building in the Chinatown district of Manila, capital of the Philippines on Friday, killing at least 11 people, authorities said. The local fire department said the victims died after they were trapped inside the building gutted by the fire that broke out before 7:30 a.m.. It took firefighters about two hours to put out the fire. Residents told reporters at the site that a liquefied gas petroleum tank in the canteen on the first floor exploded, triggering the fire. However, the bureau, which is conducting an investigation, has yet to confirm the cause. On August 2, the local government paid tribute to the victims of the fire accident and announced plans to conduct fire inspections on all indoor structures, with a special focus on buildings constructed more than 15 years ago.
