Filipino fishermen worried as oil spill threatens livelihood
Fishermen in Bulacan are worried they will lose their livelihoods after an oil spill from a capsized vessel washed up close to their shores.
“This oil that is spreading, I hope the government finds a solution right away. It's a big loss for us fisher folks," said 60-year-old fisherman Pilo Loreto.
MT Terra Nova, a marine tanker carrying 1.4 million liters of industrial fuel, sank on July 25 in rough seas off the coast of Limay in the province of Bataan leaving one crew member dead. Officials were investigating whether the sinking is related to Typhoon Carina, which on Wednesday flooded swathes of the capital Manila and surrounding towns.
