All flights in and out of Catania airport in Sicily have been halted due to an eruption from nearby Mount Etna.
Catania airport is the gateway to eastern Sicily and attracts more arrivals than the capital Palermo.
The airport has already been closed this month due to ash clouds and today’s closure adds further travel chaos during the peak summer tourist season.
Normal operations are due to resume once the ash fallout has ended.
