Curfews, spiraling protests in Bangladesh push people across border into India

People from Bangladesh crossed the border to India on Saturday, July 20, as deadly students-led protests against government job quotas killed at least 110 people this week.

The people entered India through the borders at neighboring states of West Bengal and Tripura and went through a series of security checks upon their arrival.

Bangladesh soldiers patrolled the deserted streets of the capital Dhaka on Saturday and set up roadblocks during a curfew meant to quell the deadly protests.

Internet and text message services have been suspended since Thursday, July 18, cutting the South Asian nation off from the rest of the world as police cracked down on protests that have continued despite a ban on public gatherings.
