"Meantone" is improved versions of the "Just Intonation"(Pure tuning).
Although it remains somewhat disconcerting to ears accustomed to the 12 equal temperament, the "Meantone" proves effective in creating a magical fairy tale world.
Around 1891, when The Nutcracker was composed, it is generally believed that the 12 equal temperament was quite popular. However, a study of ballet music and music for ballroom dancing shows that there are many pieces like this one for which "Meantone" or "Modified Meantone" fits well.
