Hylton (1892-1965) was a pioneer of British dance bands and led what many regard as the premier European show band of the 1920's and 1930's. He appeared all over continental Europe while recording prolifically. In 1929 alone, Jack Hylton and his Orchestra sold more than three million records and gave 700 performances. For more detailed info on Hylton I refer to his performance of "Happy Feet". At the end of the 1920s, in order to take advantage of newly-available sound technology, Hollywood studios began creating star-studded entertainment spectacle films. The movies were filled with popular musical numbers and elaborate dance sequences, often at the cost of plot. These musicals also featured their fair share of sexy costumes, and women’s bare legs often were emphasized. The unusual publicity still for Fox Movietone Follies of 1929 takes the focus on women’s legs to the extreme, literally blocking out the performers’ upper halves. Fox Movietone Follies of 1929 includes the song "The Breakaway," which inspired its own dance craze. It may seem unbelievable, but unfortunately this film is presumed lost. Dear listeners, check your attics and basements. This brilliant record was made the same year of the release. It offers a selection including That's You Baby, Walking With Susie, Breakaway, Big City Blues. Personnel is unknown.
