The United States is on alert for an Iranian attack in the Middle East after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Israel was ready for war against Iran. The superpower is in high alert mode and is actively preparing to face an Iranian retaliatory attack that could occur within the next week.
Iran may be targeting Israeli or American assets in response to last week's Israeli attack on Damascus. The attack carried out by Israel killed Iran's top commander.
The attack, which was possibly carried out by Iran, even became the main topic of discussion between American President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu when the two spoke by telephone from Thursday, April 4, 2024, to Friday, April 5, 2024.
The two countries cannot yet predict when or how Iran plans to counterattack, an official said, as reported by CNN. A direct attack on Israel by Iran is one of the worst-case scenarios that the Joe Biden administration is preparing for, as it would guarantee a rapid escalation of the already tumultuous situation in the Middle East.
Israel has carried out numerous attacks against Iranian targets in Syria. Israel has even frequently targeted weapons shipments destined for the powerful Iranian proxy Hezbollah in Lebanon. The targeting of the embassy itself marks a significant increase because the embassy is considered the sovereign territory of the country it represents. Iran vowed revenge after an Israeli airstrike on the Iranian embassy compound in Syria killed at least seven top Iranian officials.
Iran's foreign ministry said Mohammed Reza Zahedi, the top commander of Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards, aka IRGC, and senior commander Muhammad Hadi Haji Rahimi were among those killed in the attack.
The United States quickly informed Iran that the Joe Biden administration was not involved, had no knowledge of the attack on the embassy last Monday, and had warned Iran against targeting United States assets in the Middle East.
