The United Kingdom is urged to prepare as the Met Office issues a solemn warning regarding an extraordinary weather event, anticipated to occur once in 250 years, poised to impact the nation with severe winter conditions.
While a Sudden Stratospheric Warming (SSW) event typically manifests every two extended winters, intermittent years witness its absence. However, this year deviates from the norm, with meteorologists forecasting an unprecedented occurrence of three SSW events—a phenomenon of remarkable rarity.
Operating between 10km and 50km above the Earth's surface, the SSW process discreetly warms the stratosphere, with its implications remaining largely imperceptible at ground level. Nevertheless, its atmospheric interplay redirects the jet stream, triggering a series of consequential shifts. As the jet stream meanders, a formidable high-pressure system emerges over the northern Atlantic, impeding the customary flow of mild, moist, and gusty weather systems from the west.
