One of the National Trust benches nestled on Black Down with a commanding view out over the magnificent landscape was skilfully captured by Richard Walker-Liew, winning him first prize in the 2023 Black Down and Hindhead National Trust Supporters photographic competition.
The special orange of a winter sunrise makes the bracken and beech leaves glow with warmth, enhancing the natural beauty that is typical of the National Trust’s nature reserves around Haslemere.
Junior winner, Jack Stephenson, is a regular visitor to Black Down and beautifully framed the familiar view at the Temple of the Winds with lush summer leaves overhead and his trusty bike leant against the stone bench.
The comments beside each of the stunning winning photos below come from the lead judge, Dr Clinton Blackman, chairman of Haslemere Camera Club (www.haslemerecameraclub.com), explaining their selection from among the many photos submitted to the competition last year.
On Saturday, January 20, Clinton joined Bob Daniels, committee chairman of the Black Down and Hindhead National Trust Supporters at Haslemere’s Raymond Reid Photo, long-term sponsors of the competition, for presentation of the prizes.
Brian Simmons of Raymond Reid Photo presented vouchers, framed photos and photo mugs to each of the winners.
The National Trust owns significant areas of countryside around Haslemere, managing them for their internationally significant wildlife species and natural habitats.
