The sixth generation of the 5 Series Touring is here and it brings with it the first electric i5 version

The BMW 5 Series lineup is growing as the company introduces the new Touring version. It follows in the footsteps of the redesigned sedan and aims to be an attractive alternative to crossovers.

The wagon, which is planned to be released in May, does not stray too far from its counterpart, as it eschews soft curves for sharp lines and sharp surfaces. We can also see a distinctive grille that will be available with optional BMW Iconic Glow contour lighting.

Moving further back, a strong shoulder line and a slightly sloping roof can be seen. They are joined by a relatively plain rear end with an angular window and slim taillights.

18 and 19 inch wheels come as standard, but 21 inch wheels will also be offered as an option. Speaking of which, customers can order the M Sport, M Sport Pro and M Carbon Exterior packages.

In terms of size, the model is 3.8 inches (97 mm) longer, 1.3 inches (32 mm) wider and 0.7 inches (17 mm) taller than the previous model. The wheelbase also increased by 0.8 inches (20 mm).

Once inside, a familiar interior with a Curved Screen consisting of a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel and a 14.9-inch infotainment system stands out. The latter runs BMW Operating System 8.5; This means it supports video streaming as well as AirConsole gaming. Customers will also find Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility.

We'll learn all the details closer to the launch, but BMW stated that the wagon is equipped with sports seats and a new steering wheel with a flatter bottom. The model is also more 'responsible' as it has a "fully vegan interior" as standard equipment.

While that's all well and good, the real focus of the 5 Series Touring is cargo space. The trunk holds 20.1 cubic feet (570 liters) of luggage, but this can be expanded to 60 cubic feet (1,700 liters) by folding down the rear seats. BMW also noted that there is storage space under the load floor as well as an automatic tailgate to facilitate loading and unloading.

A variety of options will be available, including a panoramic glass roof and BMW Individual Merino leather. Customers will also be able to get the BMW Interaction Bar as well as the 18-speaker Bowers & Wilkins premium audio system.

The redesigned wagon sees the introduction of the electric i5 with an 81.2 kWh battery pack. The i5 eDrive40 powers a rear-mounted engine that develops 335 hp (250 kW / 340 PS) and 317 lb-ft (430 Nm) of torque in the Touring. This allows the model to accelerate to 60 mph in 6.1 seconds and reach a range of 348 miles (560 km) under the WLTP testing procedure.
