Sri Lankan motorcycle racing legend Ananda Wedisinghe passed away on Monday, 29 May 2017 at the Kandy National Hospital Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in Kandy, Central Province of Sri Lanka. He was 47 at the time of his death.
Ananda Wedisinghe had been over five weeks in a coma, after he was involved in a racing crash during the annual Nuwara Eliya Road Race meeting, held at Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka, on Sunday, 23 April 2017.
The accident happened during the Group Super Motard 450 cm3 Class race at the Nuwara Eliya Road Race. While dicing for the lead, the two riders Ananda Wedisinghe and Suraj Perera attempted to overtake each other on the approach to a fast bend. They collided and crashed into a guardrail.
Reportedly, Ananda Wedisinghe was kept unmoved at the place near where the accident happened for nearly 20 minutes before being taken to hospital. Also Suraj Perera was hospitalised for treatment. Wedisinghe survived with the help of a Life Support Machine until his death.
