This week's episode of Dead Mount Death Play is considered one of the weakest in the series thus far. Although it is not objectively bad, it falls short in comparison to the more notable episodes.
The strongest aspect of Dead Mount Death Play lies in its characters. Each character has their own backstory and personal struggles that they strive to overcome. However, this particular episode focuses primarily on setting up the big action climax for the following week. It is predominantly plot-driven, jumping from one character to another to ensure they all converge in Shinjuku on the same night. While there are some character moments, they serve as reminders of information we already know rather than showcasing character growth.
Polka continues to feel guilty for the loss of his found family in the other world, Tsubaki is driven to uncover the truth about Hosorogi, Phantom Solitaire is determined to find real magic at any cost, and the Fire-Breathing Bug aims to correct any perceived errors in our world. The episode mainly aims to align the audience's understanding and expectations for the upcoming season finale.
Fortunately, there are some amusing gags and a touch of action to keep viewers engaged, particularly in the encounter between Phantom Solitaire and Xiaoyu. These two characters are unaware of the bigger picture and have no knowledge of the other world empire or Polka's true circumstances. Their interactions lead to a fantastic misunderstanding as they try to make sense of each other's role in the unfolding events. Their fight appears to be the catalyst that will ignite the clash of supernatural forces converging on Polka's home.
However, aside from these moments, the episode primarily serves to position all the pieces in their respective places. While it is expected to have a payoff in the next episode, this particular installment feels lackluster when viewed in isolation.
