House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy visited former President Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago just three weeks after the January 6th attack due to concerns over Trump's well-being, according to a new book by Liz Cheney. Cheney wrote that McCarthy told her Trump was "depressed" and "not eating" after the attack. In her book, Cheney also wrote that some Republican members mocked McCarthy over the visit, circulating a photo of him and Trump alongside a movie quote implying McCarthy was dependent on Trump. McCarthy's visit to Mar-a-Lago so soon after January 6th was heavily criticized by some as inappropriate. However, McCarthy defended it as an effort to unite the Republican party ahead of the 2022 midterms.
