Cantaloupes have been linked to a salmonella outbreak across 32 U.S. states that has left two people dead with 99 illnesses and 45 hospitalizations have been reported so far. Several brands and retailers have recalled whole cantaloupes and pre-cut cantaloupe products that may be contaminated, including products sold under the Malichita and Rudy brands in various states between October and November. Recalled whole cantaloupes may have stickers saying "Malichita" or "Rudy" with the number "4050" and labeling indicating they were produced in Mexico. Symptoms of salmonella infection include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps within hours to days of consumption.
