New York, other states recycle and donate food headed to landfills
New York, along with other states, is addressing the issue of food waste due to concerns about limited landfill space and its contribution to global warming through methane emissions. Globally, a third of food is wasted, and in the US, it's even higher at 40 percent, costing about $218 billion annually. Harvard experts emphasize the significant environmental impact, noting that food waste generates 8 percent to 10 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions and leads to the wasteful use of 20 percent of US water resources.
