Stranded Palestinians return to Gaza through Rafah crossing
During a four-day truce in the Israel-Hamas war, Palestinians stranded in Egypt return to Gaza through the Rafah crossing. Hostages are to be released in exchange for prisoners, marking the first major reprieve in seven weeks of fighting that claimed thousands of lives. After Hamas militants attacked southern Israel on October 7, causing about 1,200 civilian deaths and seizing around 240 hostages, Israel vowed to ‘crush’ Hamas, leading to a military campaign. Gaza's Hamas government reported nearly 15,000 casualties in the coastal territory.
