Carl Thompson, WBO world cruiserweight champion, defended his title in a rematch against Chris Eubank
Date: July 18, 1998
Venue: Sheffield Arena, Sheffield
Thompson stance: orthodox
Eubank stance: orthodox
After their epic battle just three months earlier in Manchester, Carl Thompson and Chris Eubank agreed to an immediate rematch for the WBO cruiserweight title. This time, the venue was Sheffield, home to the famous Ingle gym where Thompson trained.
This was the champion's second defence, and Eubank was bidding to win a world title at a third weight. Eubank had lost four successive world title fights, so another defeat might be the end of his career. While the first fight with Thompson was very close, Eubank had suffered some nasty looking eye damage towards the end. Would the injury heal in the four months between fights?
