Shortly after the start of the race, held in extreme wet conditions, on the Döttinger Höhe several cars collided. One of them, Karl-Josef Römer's #120 Porsche violently hit into the guard rail, and the driver probably not wearing safety belts, was killed on the spot for neck injuries and a cerebral trauma.
Five years before in the Nürburgring Nordschleife, Karl-Josef Römer was involved in the accident that claimed the life of Herbert Müller, happened on 24 May 1981.
