Originally from El Salvador, Ricardo Barahona was considered one of the best drivers of his country. He lost his life while practicing for the fourth round of the Campeonato Nacional de Aceleración de Guatemala, scheduled to be contested at the Guatemala Raceway, on Sunday, 22 April 2018.
Reportedly, a brake failure triggered the accident which happened about 10h00 o'clock, during morning practice, shortly before the start of the proceedings. At the end of his run, Ricardo Barahona's car crashed at full speed into a wall on the driver's side and rolled over. The force of impact was so fierce that Barahona was killed on the spot.
Nicknamed by friends as "Vampi", Ricardo Barahona had been one of the fastest drivers during Saturday's training, and was one of the favorites in the Modified "A" division, at the wheel of his orange Honda Civic, better known as "La Podrida". He was the record holder in his class at the Guatemala Raceway, since almost two years. The quarter-mile dragstrip is located along the Carretera a Puerto Quetzal, some 75 kilometers south of the capital city, Guatemala.
