Buried in the Mud: At Least 40 Dead & 100s Missing in Indian Flood Disaster
At least 40 people have died after heavy rain caused a glacial lake to overflow in India’s Sikkim state.
Freezing cold water flooded the surrounding area, causing widespread devastation. At least 15 bridges have been destroyed.
Houses and vehicles were swept away by the flood waters. Much of the area is now buried under thick mud.
Tens of thousands have been affected by the floods, including many tourists. 26 relief camps have been set up to provide shelter. 2,400 people have been rescued so far, with at least 100 missing, including a number of military personnel.
