Jamaal Bowman Tries to Walk Back Memo Referring to ‘Nazi’ Republicans.
Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-N.Y.) walked back language that refers to some Republicans as “Nazis,” in a memo from his office coaching Democratic staffers on how to defend him for pulling a fire alarm in a House office building—adding to the controversy that unfolded Saturday as Congress was gearing up to pass a short-term budget averting a government shutdown.
Bowman apologized for using the term “Nazi” in the memo to refer to Republican extremists, calling the language “inappropriate” and writing that it was used “without my consent” in a tweet, adding “I condemn the use of the term Nazi out of its precise definition. It is important to specify the term Nazi to refer to members of the Nazi party & neo-Nazis.”

Bowman’s memo says Republicans “need to instead focus their energy on the Nazi members of their party before anything else.”

The memo, titled “Messaging Guidance: Supporting Congressman Jamaal Bowman After Accidental Fire Alarm” lays out his defense against Republicans claiming he purposely pulled the alarm in a Capitol building Saturday to delay a vote on legislation to keep the government funded, reiterating his claims that he unintentionally triggered an evacuation as he was “rushing to the House floor,” according to the memo obtained by Axios.

The “suggested talking points” in the memo instruct Democratic staffers to defend Bowman by explaining “there’s only one or two ways to get in and out” of the Cannon House Office Building and that the incident “didn’t interrupt . . . business on the floor [Saturday] in the slightest.”

The memo disputes Republicans’ claims that Bowman was intentionally attempting to delay a vote on the short-term funding bill passed hours before the midnight deadline Saturday when the existing budget was expected to expire.

The guidance blames Republicans for Bowman’s haste, accusing them of unveiling “the bill text 15 minutes before the vote” and also alleges “the signage on the doors is unnecessarily confusing”—a narrative that contests a press release from Capitol Police Monday that says “officers had previously placed signs with clear language that explained the door was secured and marked as an emergency exit only.”“It is an extreme reach on the part of MAGA Republicans to assert that Rep. Bowman intended to harm or destruct anyone or thing. The exact opposite is true: he was trying to do his job,” one of the “suggested talking points” from the memo states.

Bowman is facing an internal House investigation and threats from some Republicans to call for his expulsion after he pulled a fire al
