South Sudan and Cape Verde secure second round spots in World Cup basketball
South Sudan's 89-69 victory over China and Cape Verde's 81-75 win against Venezuela made African basketball history. These wins positioned both teams for the World Cup's second round and a shot at Africa's automatic qualification for the Paris Olympics. Despite being the lowest-ranked entrants, South Sudan (62nd) and Cape Verde (64th) secured their debut World Cup spots. Each has one group-stage game remaining — South Sudan faces Serbia and Cape Verde takes on Slovenia, led by Luka Doncic. The top-ranked African World Cup team earns direct Paris Olympics qualification.
