Over 200 school districts have joined lawsuits against Facebook, TikTok, Snapchat, and YouTube, claiming that these social media companies have created addictive products causing classroom disciplinary issues and mental health problems, diverting resources from education. The school districts claim that teachers and administrators waste valuable time dealing with cyberbullying and disciplinary problems arising from social media use. They also contend that they must provide additional training, establish new school policies, and offer counseling to address the anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts resulting from excessive app usage among students. The tech companies are seeking to have the cases dismissed, arguing that the alleged harms are still protected under Section 230, while also denying the dangers children face online.
