Spotify executive Bill Simmons referred to Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, as "grifters" following the premature end of their partnership with the streaming platform. The collaboration between Spotify and Harry and Meghan's production company, Archewell Audio, was initially announced as a "multiyear partnership" to deliver inspirational podcasts. However, the partnership resulted in just one series called "Archetypes," consisting of 12 episodes featuring interviews by Meghan with notable guests like Serena Williams and Mariah Carey. The deal was reported to be worth approximately $20 million. Spotify and Archewell Audio released a joint statement announcing their agreement to part ways. Bill Simmons had previously expressed negative sentiments towards the couple, including feeling "embarrassed" to share the Spotify platform with Harry. Simmons has faced controversy in the past for making controversial statements, leading to a suspension by ESPN in 2014. Spotify and Archewell Audio have not responded to Simmons' remarks.
