A watchdog has found that the Metropolitan Police is risking missing out on identifying homicides and "has not learned from their failures" in the Stephen Port case.
Port was found guilty of the murder and rape of the four men, who he arranged to meet on dating apps such as Grindr in Barking, east London, and is currently serving a whole life order behind bars. However, considerable errors were made in the investigation before his conviction, with significant evidence missed by investigators.
Inspector of Constabulary Matt Parr said: “The Met has not learned enough from their failings eight years ago, and starkly, what went wrong there could happen again.”
Port's neighbour, Ryan Edwards, told NationalWorld: "Sadly, the police seem to be masters of paying lip service and ticking boxes. I just have no confidence in the local policing at all, given their approach to LGBT people in the borough just doesn't seem to have moved on in the last decade.
"If something as tragic and as monumental as happened with Stephen Port and they haven't moved on, what will take them to improve?"
