Facial recognition has long been criticized as an overreaching and oftentimes racist surveillance tool. It has also been utilized in places like Hong Kong to identify and track those who were protesting a bill allowing extradition to China back in 2019. Now, many are accusing Russia of doing the same, detaining and questioning those who have been protesting the war all because their surveillance tools were able to identify them via their faces.
