The Elgin Marbles could soon be returned to Greece as part of a landmark deal. George Osborne, chairman of the British Museum is understood to have negotiated a ‘permanent loan’ with Greece to repatriate the sculptures. The 2,500-year-old marbles originally formed part of the Parthenon and other sacred and ceremonial structures built on the Acropolis of Athens in the 5th century BCE, but were taken by Lord Elgin in the early 19th century when he was the British ambassador to the Ottoman Empire.
